A New Look for Captain America

Marvel unveiled the new Alex Ross designed Captain America today, and I have to say it ain't too shabby. Its popular to hate on Ross these days, but I like his designs, and this one's no exception. I'm surprised they kept the wings, I dig how the reshaped cowl makes his mouth area look like a second "A", and I like the incorporation of Cap's original shield, all reliably entertaining Ross tropes. We've not seen a gun-toting Cap since World War II, so that's a bit unsettling, but I absolutely trust writer Ed Brubaker, so I'm sure there's a point behind the gun beyond just making Cap hardcore.

Of course, the big question is: Who is this guy? The way the story's been going, with Cap's letter to Stark and the progress of the Winter Soldier plot, I'm thinking Mr. James B. Barnes a.k.a. Bucky a.k.a the Winter Soldier is going to become the new Captain America, bringing his firearms mastery with him, but they could always surprise us. The solicitations for Captain America #33 promise the long awaited showdown between Winter Soldier and Stark, which could lead to a promotion for Bucky or another twist, like Stark siccing the replacement Cap on Winter Soldier.

Cue the assertion that classic Steve Rogers Captain America will be back by issue #50. Well, of course he will. That oughtta give new Cap some time to somehow prove himself unworthy, necessitating the return of the original in as dramatic a fashion as possible. Or not, maybe. I don't know exactly what he has up his sleeve, but Brubaker obviously has a master plan, and I'm just hangin' out enjoying the ride.

He's shiny because the suit's made out of the Metal Men! Hah! Actually, I like the design very much. Also, the cowl seams, which mysteriously migrated over from the Ultimate universe are gone, helping keep his brand(universe, that is) identity distinct.

I have to admit, when I first saw it it made me think of a peeled banana. But the more I look at it, the more it grows on me - I especially like the way the front torso echoes Cap's original, four-cornered shield.

When Cap does make his inevitable return, it would be nice if the new guy basically said, "I was just holding your place while you were gone - welcome back." I'd also be happy with the status quo; it's not as if the title is suffering without Steve Rogers.

Way too many stars but a nice design overall. My favorite element is the WWII era canteen.

A nice enough design, though I've got to wonder why the Silver Agent has a shield now...

Agree with lurkerwithout. The Silver Agent meets the Comedian? Wild.
